I’ve become somewhat addicted to a Korean wine soap opera called Terroir. If this isn’t a testamant to the dangers of following links on your Google Alerts then I don’t know what is. I’m locked in now and will have to see it through to the bitter end. Come and join the ride with me?
Here’s what’s occuring.
Episode 1, Part One, opens up with what looks a car advert (all Brian May guitar and sweeping panaromas) as a Korean Dude in sunglasses drives up to a gated Chateau somewhere in Bordeaux. He presses the buzzer on the gate and there’s a foreboding wait until a French man, quite possibly the butler, appears as if from nowhere.
Our protaganist says “Hello, I’m from Korea.”
“I’m sorry no one is at home”. The butler answers and walks off. Typical bloody French hospitality.
“I will return again next time” the cool Korean mutters.
This, of course, is an odd thing to say. He’s basically predicting he’ll be back a couple of times more as if he returns again next time then he’ll be coming back again after his next visit. So 3 times. Right?
Cut to a moodily lit cellar where a duplicitous French man is trying to sell our hero a 1945 Chateau Mouton Meyers for 20,000 euros. But our man isn’t a fool. In a fit of wanton provocation he whips out his waiters friend (the Walter PPK of the wine trade), pops the cork, sniffs it and sticks two fingers up at the fraudster. “Two Euros” he says, “this wine is a con”. He knows his onions, and apparently his wine also.
If this isn’t an in-your-face allegory for the East sticking it to the to the West then I’ll eat my wan tons. Yummy.
What? You’re not hooked yet? Watch this bite size chunck below and if it gets you then watch the full series here

sad…me and my daughter too!!!! we are so hooked up to these korean soap operas. its incredible. between “you are my destiny,” “surgeon bong,” and “to my love” – alias “terroir” we are well entertained. these people know drama i have to admit. i began two years ago and still watching them. something that i have noticed, at the begining they announced that the soap opera is not recommended for anyone under age 15. age 15? sure, just like in united states. NOT! nevertheless, at least with them is different, i have never see any cursing or sex material or bad impression in their drama. that’s a lot of points they get from me and my family. anyway, keep enjoying it and let’s one day make a club.
its sad that Terroir has gone to an end… :’( yup, tonight was the last episode :’(… unexpectedly.
I really enjoyed the soap opera terroir, I would like the name of the actress who played lee woo ju
