Schoolgirl gets an A-Grade for hangover-free wine

wine scientist Schoolgirl gets an A Grade for hangover free wineThe science is in. An Australian schoolgirl from Queensland has won a top science award for making a hangover-free wine.

Alix Pichon spent her lunch times mashing and straining peaches at Trinity Anglican School in Cairns and ended up with 12 buckets full of peach wine. At 17, Miss Pichon has been unable to legally drink the wine in the classroom so as yet cannot provide us with a tasting note. She said:

I haven’t had a chance to taste the wine – it was mostly done at school – so no, not in a school environment, that’s not really possible. But I think it would taste like a normal peach wine.

Ms Pichon beat 4,000 students to take out the BHP Billiton-CSIRO science award for the wine and she claims the wine can be stored for up to six weeks, without the hangover-inducing preservatives if the alcohol content is around 13 per cent.

A spokesperson for the awards said that although there were already preservative-free wines available on the market, Ms Pichon’s research was significant because it provided an indication of shelf life.

As for Alix, her reward is to represent Australia at the 2011 International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles this coming May.

While congratulating Ms Pichon on her scientific prowess we must condemn the concept of hangover-free alcoholic drinks. ‘No Pain, No Gain’ is our firm mantra on this topic.

Centuries of research into wine ageing and preservation, challenged by an Aussie schoolgirl fermenting peaches in buckets. Wonder what the other entrants came up with.
